Why Pilates?

Pilates is a full mind and body workout.  The specific order of the workout engages all muscle groups.  The movements take precision and control.  The focus will be on your technique, and core.  It’s an exercise where you will see results and feel better after the class.  It elongates and strengthens the muscles and joint mobility.  We love Pilates and want you to as well. For most people, Pilates absolutely works.  It’s not an overnight fix, because it takes time to learn new and more efficient movement patterns.  But it is a long-lasting program and lifestyle. Pilates is best utilized 2-3 times per week.  You can supplement your Pilates class experience by doing Pilates mat work at home.

Why the initial private session?

Everyone benefits from a private session no matter how long you have been practicing Pilates.  We want our clients to feel secure on the equipment.  You and your instructor will be able to set goals, and work on the areas you would like to improve.  Some clients need more than one session to feel comfortable in a group class.  It’s an exciting time to get to know you, and for you to get to know our instructors.

What is the required sock policy about?

We have a mandatory sock policy for the health and safety of our clients.  We carry a line of socks, called ToeSox. We have a variety of styles, colors, and sizes.

What do I wear?

Women are most comfortable in form-fitting clothing, with longer shorts, pants, or leggings. Men are most comfortable in bike or compression shorts worn under another pair of shorts or sweat pants. Very loose-fitting clothing should not be worn, as it can become caught in the machine.

What should I look for in a Pilates teacher?

Pilates teachers are not required to complete a national exam, and not all teachers are equal. You should make sure a teacher’s initial Pilates certification required at least 400 hours of training.  Further, you should make sure your teacher continues their education.  Our instructors have at least 200 hours of training for their Peak PilatesR  Certifications.  They have over 20 years’ fitness and nutrition experience.  With their diverse backgrounds, we have helped beginners, athletes, dancers, runners, post rehab patients, and people with ongoing medical and physical issues.

Why group Pilates reformer?

We take a perceived exclusive exercise program and make it accessible to everyone, regardless of your fitness level.

Do men do Pilates?

Yes!  In, fact, the system was originated by a man to help heal soldiers with war injuries.  Pilates then came to New York, where he helped heal injured dancers and performers.  Our male clients are runners, professionals and experience athletes.

How is Pilates different from yoga?

Yoga and Pilates share some common traits; they both incorporate physical and mental qualities, which is one reason people often confuse them. Yoga was developed in ancient India, and Pilates was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, who was from Europe. Pilates looked to many sources for inspiration for his exercises, including yoga postures and animals in the wild. Yoga uses some mat and small props to help align the body during postures, whereas Pilates uses both the mat as well as spring-based equipment, such as the reformer, to align and exercise the body. Although they are both mind-body disciplines, there is a significant difference between the two.

How do I get into classes when they seem to be booked already?

Make sure to check the MINDBODY app for the schedule.  Please, sign yourself up for the waitlist.  Schedules change, and spots will open.  Make you read our late cancel policy.

What about parking?

Parking can be a bit of a challenge on Bridge Street.  Try to get to the studio 10 minutes before class starts, this will give you enough time to find a parking spot.  If you park on Bridge Street, there is a 2-hour parking limit.  If you can’t find a spot on the street the best alternative is to park in a lot with metered spots behind our building on Main Street and Price.  A third choice is to park in the lot off Main Street and Prospect Street.  That lot is also a metered lot.  It’s easy to pay in the lots using the app called Passport.
